The preterist view is harming Jesus’ people. The preterist view confuses the Second Coming with the Day of the Lord.
The Second Coming has to do with the point in time when a person decides to repent of unbelief and begin believing in Jesus, Acts 3:19-21.
The Day of the Lord is the term the Bible uses to describe a time of judgment in a person’s life, Joel 1:15.
1 Corinthians 11:32 tells us that a Christian is judged so that they are not condemned with the world.
This means that God’s judgment will be necessary as they need correction. This suggests that “The Day” may occur many times in an individual Christian life as the Father determines that correction is needed.
The
The “day of the Lord” is not a one-time occurrence but a period of correction.
Jesus’ Second Coming is a personal presence.
Jesus’ Second Coming happens when an individual accepts Christ and the Father sends Him into the believer’s heart, Acts 3:19-21.
Ac 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that so there may come seasons of refreshing from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that he may send the Christ who hath been appointed for you, even Jesus: 21 whom the heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, whereof God spake by the mouth of His holy prophets that have been from of old.
We see that Jesus went to heaven in Acts 1:11 and He comes from Heaven to an individual from in Acts 3:20.
The common disagreement with this viewpoint concerns Acts 3:21 and has to do with when the “restoration” happens.
Ac 3:21 whom the heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, whereof God spake by the mouth of His holy prophets that have been from of old.
Jesus said “all things” would be restored by John the Baptist. Since He said “all” this statement by Jesus would then include the restoration spoken of in Acts 3:21.
The same exact Greek word for “restore” is used in Acts 3:21 and Matthew 17:11.
Mt 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. KJV)
John preached repentance and Jesus is sent by the Father when an individual repents, Acts 3:19-21.
That Greek word translated “restore” is Strong’s word numbered 600.
The theme of John the Baptist’s ministry was “Repentance” and it is repentance from unbelief that restores the relationship between God and Man. Mankind lost that relationship in the Garden of Eden and that relationship is restored when a person repents from unbelief and decides to believe.
To Continue – Strongs #600 It is also the same word used by the Apostles in Acts 1:6.
Ac 1:6 ¶ When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? (KJV)
The Second Coming is personal and through the agency of the Holy Spirit, as is seen through the comparison of Acts 2:38 and 3:20.
Ac 2:38 And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Ac 3:20 and that he may send the Christ who hath been appointed for you, even Jesus:
As you can see in Acts 2 Peter says that the Holy Spirit will be sent upon repentance from unbelief and in Acts 3 Peter says that upon repentance from unbelief Jesus will be sent.
These two statements are made in the same discussion, and through them Peter illustrated that He understood that Jesus would come the Second time (Heb 9:28) to save a person through the Holy Spirit as John 14:23 and Eph 3:17 show.
Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Eph 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
Now to the other misunderstanding.
Since the Second Coming is personal and happens in response to a person’s repentance from unbelief. The other visitations must “not” be the Second Coming.
This is clearly seen because Heb 9:28 says the first coming was to bear sins and the Second is for salvation.
Heb 9:28 so Christ also, having been once offered to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to them that wait for him, unto salvation.
The other comings are called “Days of the Lord” and are specifically for judgment/evaluation purposes, 1 Cor 11:32.
1Co 11:32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
They are not for salvation as Heb 9:28 suggests.
Isa 13:6 ¶ Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
Destruction is not the salvation spoken of in Heb 9:28.
Of course, this destruction is carried out by the thief.
The Lord comes as a thief on the Day of the Lord.
Satan is sent to judge the sinful behavior of an individual.
Only the Father knows when this will occur in a person’s life, Matt 24:36.
Mt 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
1Co 11:32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.
