Mt 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, Rm 10:13.
However –
In Matthew 7:21 some of the people who called Jesus Lord were sent to Hell.
Mt 7:21 ¶ Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Rm 10:13 and Mt 7:21 are both correct statements but can be misunderstood.
Mt 25:11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
Mt 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Jesus can use “Hellfire” in a limited fashion and save His disobedient followers by using the purifying effects of the fire, 1 Cor 3:15. In cases like this Jesus referred to it as “Outer Darkness” as the following three verses indicate.
Mt 8:12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mt 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mt 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (KJV)
In cases like this, the concept is summarized by 1 Co 3:15.
1Co 3:15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. (KJV)
Jesus is the Lion or devourer of the tribe of Judah, Hosea 5:14.
Ho 5:14 For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him. (KJV)
This means that He oversees the discipline of His followers, Heb 12:6.
Heb 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
In this case, Jesus sends willfully sinful Christians to Hell so that they learn to deny ungodly behavior, Titus 2:11-12.
Tit 2:11 ¶ For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Jesus supervises this discipline process entirely so that the individual is not tempted with more than they can bear, 1 Cor 10:13.
1 Corinthians 10:13 KJV — There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
God can save all people.
John 6:29 KJV — Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
He can teach anyone to deny ungodliness if they do not harden their hearts during the provocation, Heb 3:15.
Heb 3:15 (RSV) while it is said, “Today, when you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
People must maintain their faith in Christ as they undergo the discipline process which can be called God’s circumcision (removing the flesh) process.
The following verses illustrate this process, Deut 30:6, Ezekiel 20:37.
Deuteronomy 30:6 KJV — And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.
Ezekiel 20:37 KJV — And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant.
Hell is the place where Satan and His angels exist.
These are eternal beings, which means that Hell is an eternal fire. Being sent there even in a limited fashion is a foretaste of what could become inescapable.
Mt 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
The Christians who thought that they followed God were sent to Hell/outer darkness, however, during this earthly life Jesus’ followers can go into Hell (the prison) and come out of Hell, Matt 5:26.
Mt 5:26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
Those who were sent into Hell were being disciplined by the Lord and not condemned, 1 Cor 11:32.
1Co 11:32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
This process illustrates the action of God’s grace and it teaches those who call Jesus Lord how to deny ungodly activity, Titus 2:11-12.
